Korean Sci-Fi Thriller ‘HOPE’ Arrives in Pakistani Cinemas on October 23

Korean cinema has been quietly building an audience in Pakistan, and that audience is about to get a rare treat on the big screen. HUM Films will release HOPE, the science-fiction thriller by South Korean director Na Hong-jin, in cinemas across Pakistan on October 23. The film had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May this year, where it drew considerable attention.

A quiet port town, an unquiet arrival

The story is set in Hope Harbor, a fictional port town near the Korean Demilitarized Zone, where life moves slowly until residents come across a mysterious presence and the whole community is pulled into an extraordinary crisis. The film mixes science fiction with suspense and monster-horror elements. Na Hong-jin built his reputation on thrillers such as The Chaser and The Wailing, and HOPE is being described as the largest and most ambitious production of his career.

A cast that crosses industries

The ensemble is genuinely international. Hwang Jung-min and Zo In-sung lead the Korean cast, joined by Jung Ho-yeon, who became a global name through Squid Game. Hollywood actors Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender are also part of the film. Jung Ho-yeon recently revealed what the shoot demanded of her: she trained in handling firearms and in car drifting, and one long firearm sequence had to be filmed eighteen times because the director insisted on getting every detail right.

The same date in India

HOPE opens in India on the same October 23 date, after its release there was moved back from September so the certification process could be completed. The film has also been rolling out in markets including the United Kingdom, Sweden, Denmark and Russia. For Pakistani viewers the release matters for a simple reason: Korean films here have mostly lived on streaming platforms, and a theatrical run of this scale signals how far that audience has grown.
