Actor Imran Khan Asked to Leave India by October 28 After Joining Mumbai Protest

Bollywood actor Imran Khan has been told to leave India. Mumbai’s Foreigners Regional Registration Office has served him a notice setting an October 28 deadline, alleging that he violated the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025 by joining a protest at August Kranti Maidan on October 10 that demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
An OCI card, a detention and a complaint
Khan is a United States citizen who holds an Overseas Citizen of India card. The card lets him live and work in India indefinitely, but it does not give him citizenship rights such as voting — and, officials argue, political activity sits outside what a foreign national may do. Police detained him during the demonstration, along with his partner, actor Lekha Washington, and his cousin Zayne Marie Khan, and released them later. BJP leader Kirit Somaiya then filed a complaint questioning how a foreign citizen could join a political agitation. Senior police officers say the action has been initiated under the Act and that the law will take its course.
Now headed for the Bombay High Court
Khan, a nephew of superstar Aamir Khan who shot to fame with Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na and Delhi Belly, is not accepting the notice quietly. His lawyers say a petition against the FRRO order is being prepared for the Bombay High Court and is likely to be filed by Friday, with a request for an urgent hearing. He remains in Mumbai for now, and the case will decide whether he gets relief before the October 28 deadline runs out.
