CDF Field Marshal Asim Munir to Visit Tehran Today as Pakistan’s Mediation Push Continues

News Cuff

ISLAMABAD: Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir is due to visit Tehran today, Tuesday, according to a Pakistani official and Iranian media reports carried by Reuters. No detailed itinerary has been released, and no agreements have been announced in advance. The background, though, is well known: Pakistan has played a key mediating role between the United States and Iran throughout this year, and this Tehran visit is the latest step in that effort.

Picking up where the summer talks stopped

Munir has met Iranian leaders before, in talks over the summer that focused on three things: preventing further escalation, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and bringing the conflict to an expedited end. None of the three was settled. In April, senior American and Iranian representatives met in Islamabad without reaching an agreement. In June, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding brokered by Pakistan, only for that interim peace arrangement to collapse in July amid continuing disagreements over security and navigation. Tuesday’s visit returns to the same unfinished agenda.

Why Hormuz matters to Pakistan too

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes. When traffic through it stalls, oil prices jump far beyond the region, and import-dependent countries such as Pakistan feel the shock first, at the fuel pump and in freight costs. That is a large part of why Islamabad has kept repeating the same line all year: the door to dialogue must stay open, because no country enjoys lasting peace while its neighbourhood is in conflict.

Too early for outcomes

It would be premature to expect a breakthrough to be announced today. Officials have not published a meeting list or hinted at any deal. What the visit does signal, in a week of busy regional diplomacy, is that Pakistan is not stepping back from the mediator’s role it has built since the spring. The statement that follows the meetings, whenever it comes, will show whether the talks moved beyond courtesy.
