Lahore High Court Dismisses Petition Against 10-Day Basant 2027, Calls It Premature Without an Official Notification

News Cuff

Basant has not yet returned to Lahore’s rooftops, but the argument over it has already reached the courtroom. On Friday, the Lahore High Court dismissed a petition challenging the proposed 10-day Basant celebrations in 2027, holding that the plea had come too early. Justice Shahram Sarwar Chaudhry asked a simple question: without an official notification setting out the festival schedule, what exactly was the court being asked to strike down? An order, he observed, cannot rest on documents picked up from a website.

The petitioner, lawyer Shahid Islam, had argued that stretching the festival over ten days would put the city at risk. No standard operating procedures were in place, he said, and he claimed the 2026 edition of Basant had left dozens of people dead. He wanted the ten-day announcement declared void and the festival cut back to a single day.

No notification, no hearing

The court was not persuaded — at least not yet. Without a notification, Justice Chaudhry noted, it could not even be determined whether the proposed arrangements violated anyone’s fundamental rights. Once the document exists, the government can be asked to explain itself. The judge also expressed surprise that the registrar’s office had let the petition through without raising an objection, and asked the petitioner’s counsel why a fine should not be imposed on him.

The dismissal, however, comes with a door left open. The petitioner has been directed to come back with a fresh plea once he has the official notification in hand. In other words, the real legal fight over Basant 2027 begins the day the Punjab government puts its plan on paper — and whether kites fill Lahore’s skies for ten days next spring remains an open question.
