Vance blames Iran war for Republican midterm rout, breaking openly with Trump

Washington: US Vice President JD Vance has blamed the war on Iran for his party’s defeat in the midterm elections. In a lengthy post on X on Wednesday, he put it bluntly: “The reason we lost is the war.” Anyone who wanted to argue, he wrote, that losing the Senate for the next six years was a price worth paying for the war should go ahead and make that case — but the fact itself could not be dodged. The post landed hours after Democrats seized both chambers of Congress on Tuesday night, and it has opened a fresh argument inside Washington.

What Vance actually said

Vance’s point, as he framed it, was not that Republican voters stayed home. Citing a pollster he called one of the smartest people he knows, he said many people who voted for the Trump-Vance ticket in 2024 had switched to the Democrats this time, and when asked what would win them back, four answers accounted for nearly all of them: end the war, focus on the cost of living, put America First, and change Washington’s relationship with Israel. He added that an earlier recommendation to end the war had been “sound advice”, and that “everyone knows why we lost”. At the same time he tried to play down any rift with Trump, noting that the president himself had acknowledged on Tuesday night that the war had cost Republicans the election.

Trump’s answer was very different

President Donald Trump struck a note that was at once more measured and more defiant. He told the Wall Street Journal that the war was, in his view, the right thing to do: “I did the right thing. I would have done it again.” For him the Iran war was one factor among several, not the whole story. Speaking to Fox News, he refused to treat the result as a verdict on himself and blamed candidates for failing to inspire voters — “I wasn’t on the ballot. If I was on the ballot, they would have got out.” That gap is what made Vance’s post news: the vice president called the war the reason for the defeat, while the president called it only a piece of it and kept defending the war itself.

Why this statement matters

According to Reuters, Vance spoke out while Trump is weighing whether to restart major combat operations against Iran, a step US officials say is still under consideration. Vance has been a key negotiator with Iran and is widely seen as a likely presidential candidate in 2028, and his tone on Iran has consistently been more dovish than that of other senior figures in the administration. Al Jazeera describes this as the closest he has yet come to publicly diverging from his boss. The war is now in its ninth month and has pushed up energy prices, feeding the cost-of-living anger that dominated the campaign. Democrats take over the new Congress in January; until then, the sharpest fight over whether to continue the war or end it is likely to be inside the Republican Party itself.
