Governor’s Rule Imposed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as Federation Takes Over the Province, PTI Calls It a Grave Political Mistake

News Cuff

PESHAWAR: Governor’s rule has been imposed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa after the declaration of a state of emergency in the province, transferring administrative control to the federal government and effectively ending the provincial government’s rule. The decision was taken in view of the deteriorating law and order situation, following a rise in terrorist incidents and infiltration attempts in the border districts in recent days.

Federal authorities have issued fresh instructions to the provincial administration, while law enforcement agencies continue their duties as normal. In a related development, security forces foiled a major infiltration attempt in the Kurram area, an incident being cited as an example of the gravity of the current situation.

Political reaction

Political parties have reacted strongly to the move. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has termed the governor’s rule a grave political mistake and an insult to the mandate of the province’s people. PTI leader Barrister Gohar also expressed serious reservations, while Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) has summoned a meeting of its core committee to review the situation.

The federal government maintains that restoring the writ of the constitution and the law in the province was the need of the hour. Analysts expect further political turbulence in the province in the coming days, with the decision’s effects likely to be felt across national politics.
