Faran Tahir Returns to Marvel as Raza After 18 Years in VisionQuest

Some villains get a grand farewell. Raza never even got a death scene — and now, eighteen years later, he is back. Pakistani-American actor Faran Tahir has reprised his role as Raza Hamidmi al-Wazar in episode six of Marvel’s VisionQuest, the same character who kidnapped Tony Stark in 2008’s Iron Man.
An old enemy in a new suit
The episode takes the story to Madripoor, the crime-ridden city first seen in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Vision has travelled there to rescue Tommy Maximoff, his son, who has been taken hostage by the bounty hunter Paladin. Just as that confrontation builds, Raza walks in with a heavily armed crew — and he is after Vision too.
Long-time viewers will notice the makeover straight away. The military fatigues from Iron Man are gone, replaced by a sharp suit, and Raza now wears an earpiece. Fans have already spotted a possible reason: in Iron Man, Obadiah Stane paralysed him with a sonic taser. The earpiece may be his insurance against ever being caught that way again.
The death that was never shown
What makes the return work is a loose end Marvel left dangling for nearly two decades. In Iron Man, Stane betrayed Raza and ordered his men to “finish up” — but the film never showed Raza dying. Audiences assumed the worst; the film never confirmed it. VisionQuest finally closes that gap: Raza survived, and he is now operating in Madripoor’s underworld on his own terms.
His appearance in the episode is brief. Paladin bests him in the confrontation and leaves him unconscious, but alive. The door, in other words, is still open — Raza remains a live threat in the Marvel universe, and his story does not end here.
Who is Faran Tahir?
Born in Los Angeles in 1963 and raised in Pakistan, Tahir is the son of veteran actor Naeem Tahir and Yasmeen Tahir, one of Radio Pakistan’s best-known voices. After studying theatre at Berkeley and Harvard, he went on to play Captain Robau in Star Trek and President Patel in Elysium, and took the title role in Othello on stage in Washington in 2016.
Marvel announced his return in January 2025, but it is only with the episode now streaming that fans have seen it for themselves: the franchise’s very first villain, back where it all began. For Pakistani audiences, it is more than nostalgia — a reminder that Pakistani-origin talent is still finding room at the top of Hollywood’s biggest franchise.
