Winter has made its first real appearance in Galiyat. Snowfall began across parts of the hill region on Saturday, and Abbottabad police moved quickly with a safety advisory for tourists heading into the hills.
The district administration says snow has made roads slippery, and residents and visitors have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel while conditions remain uncertain.
Police deployed on key roads
On the instructions of Abbottabad District Police Officer Haroon Rashid Khan, police personnel have been deployed along major roads and tourist spots in Galiyat to guide visitors and help in emergencies. Anyone who runs into difficulty can seek assistance from the nearest police deployment.
Before you set out
The advisory is practical rather than dramatic, and worth following to the letter. Check the latest weather before leaving and follow the instructions of the relevant authorities. Inspect your vehicle’s tyres, brakes and essential equipment before a hill journey. Drive slowly on slippery roads and avoid dangerous overtaking — on snow, a moment of impatience can turn into a serious accident.
Tourists are also advised to carry warm clothing, essential medicines, drinking water and emergency supplies. And if the weather deteriorates or a road looks unsafe, the advisory is blunt: postpone the trip. The snow will still be there another day; the risk is not worth it.
The snowfall is part of the same weather system that brought rain to several parts of Punjab on Saturday and pulled temperatures down in the twin cities. In the hills, that system arrives as snow — which is exactly why anyone travelling there needs to take twice the care.
