Saudi air defences shot down three ballistic missiles and four drones launched by Yemen’s Houthis early on Tuesday, the Saudi-led coalition said, in the latest flare-up of a confrontation that has sharpened markedly through October.

Coalition spokesman Major General Turki Al-Malki confirmed both interceptions: the three missiles were heading toward the kingdom’s Eastern Region, and the four drones toward its southern region. In both cases, he said, air defences intercepted and destroyed the incoming threats.

Alerts first, all-clear later

Before the interceptions, Saudi Civil Defence had issued early-warning alerts for the Eastern Province and Al-Kharj governorate through the National Early Warning Platform, warning residents of a potential hostile threat. People were told to follow Civil Defence instructions, to stay away from affected sites, and not to film or share videos of interception attempts. Civil Defence later confirmed that the danger had passed in both areas, while urging residents to keep following safety guidance. Anyone needing urgent help was directed to the unified emergency number, 911.

Why it matters now

The incident lands in the middle of a wider escalation. A UN-brokered truce from 2022 that had largely halted attacks between the coalition and the Houthis, who control the capital Sanaa, has effectively collapsed. Saudi strikes on the Houthis intensified after the group captured strategic areas along Yemen’s Red Sea coast last month, advancing toward the Bab el-Mandeb Strait — the narrow passage through which much of the Gulf’s oil reaches world markets.

The same day, the US Mission in Saudi Arabia issued a security alert, saying non-emergency US government employees and their family members had been ordered to leave the country. The State Department had raised its travel advisory for Saudi Arabia to Level 3 on October 23, urging Americans to reconsider travel because of the risk of drone and missile attacks.
