Rehman Baba Express Derails Near Multan: At Least Five Passengers Killed, 30 Injured as All Coaches Leave the Track

MULTAN: The 47-Up Rehman Baba Express, travelling from Karachi to Peshawar, derailed near Sher Shah Bridge outside Multan early on Tuesday, killing at least five passengers and injuring 30 others. Police and rescue officials said all of the train’s coaches came off the track in the accident, which a passenger said happened at around 5:15am.
Rescue operation, wounded shifted to Nishtar Hospital
Rescue 1122 teams and local officials reached the site soon after the derailment and shifted the injured to Nishtar Hospital in Multan for treatment. Rescue officials said 13 coaches had been cleared while work was still continuing in one coach. Train traffic on the route was also disrupted by the accident.
Passenger reports repair work on coach nine
One passenger told reporters that railway workers had repaired the nuts and bolts of coach number nine near Rohri before the accident. The claim has not been independently verified, and it was not immediately clear whether the reported repair had anything to do with the derailment.
Prime minister takes notice, cause not yet known
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif took notice of the accident, expressed concern over the injured passengers and directed the authorities to speed up the rescue operation and ensure the wounded received the best possible medical treatment without delay. Officials said the cause of the derailment had not yet been officially established and investigations were under way. The accident revives concerns over railway safety in Pakistan, where the Hazara Express derailment near Nawabshah in August 2023 killed at least 30 people.
