PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Apex Committee met on Monday for the first time since the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule in the province, with Governor Faisal Karim Kundi and Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi jointly chairing the session at the Governor’s House in Peshawar. Members of the advisory council, the Peshawar corps commander, the chief secretary, the inspector general of police and senior civil and military officials attended.

What the committee decided

The forum reviewed the province’s overall security situation in detail and paid tribute to the martyrs of the war against terrorism. It directed the relevant institutions to carry out coordinated, effective and decisive action against terrorist threats, said intelligence-based operations would continue, and said all available resources would be used to improve law and order.

Stronger police and CTD

The committee stressed enhancing the operational capacity of the KP police and the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD). Governor Kundi said eliminating terrorism was the province’s first priority, adding that development could be sacrificed but security could not be compromised. He said the police and CTD were the frontline force whose needs had to be met, and that measures had to be result-oriented rather than cosmetic. He also announced a zero-tolerance policy on corruption.

Centre and province on the same page, says Naqvi

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said the federal and provincial governments were on the same page on counterterrorism for the first time, and that the federation would stand with the province wherever it was needed. He added that the province itself had to lead the fight, and cautioned that not everything would change in a single day, while expressing hope that closer coordination would produce visible results.
